On the topic of TV entertainment for children, it is hard to avoid but if well chosen and not more than an hour a day, it can be a positive experience for parent and child. You should definitely sit through the cartoons with your children and then you can discus them afterwards.
I will make one suggestion as it’s of such a high standard it should be watched by everyone. The Avatar series, both the “The Last Air Bender” story of Avatar Aang (over 70 episodes) and the “Legend of Korra” series (48 episodes, so far).
Not to be confused with the blue alien film, Avatar, or the motion picture “The Last Air Bender” which is the same story done really badly.
I won’t go into the complex story lines, but they are more sophisticated and thought provoking than 90% of so called adult drama. It contains great spirit and humour and deals with a lot of philosophical, and political issues.
One sub plot I really liked was the terrorist attack on a rectangular tall building called the cultural centre. Everyone assumed it was from the northern water tribe, who had recently engaged in an attack on the southern water tribe, A southerner by the name of Varic (who makes propaganda movies about the plight of the south) tries desperately to convince the president of Republic City to aid his people and punish the north for their terrorism. Over the course of a few episodes we learn that it was Varic who actually blew up the building. A classic false flag, to justify a wider conflict. It also turns out that he was the owner of the building. He was caught because of the type of detonators that were used. A detective working the case found them at the scene and also noticed Varic used the exact specially designed detonators for special effects in his propaganda films. At first the detective was mocked by the other police for claiming such a crazy story, even his own brother tells him he has gone insane and needs to give up his pursuit of Varic. He ends up in jail for continuing to accuse this wealthy and influential person, only when others pick up on his claims is Varic arrested. His attempt to draw other nations into the war has completely failed.
This of course is where cartoons differ from the real world. Would any New York detective or prosecutor pursue Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bremner etc. for the sake of truth, to the point of ending up in prison or worse? So far they haven’t, and the wars based on the lie of the century continue.
Thanks for letting me know about that, Dr. Kropotkin. It’s funny how these types of false flag events and other things that adults dismiss as incomprehensible gobbledygook really are simple enough for children to understand. I think of the Star Wars prequels, which are terrible movies in my opinion but contain an interesting and obvious allegory to the Bush 9/11 presidency. I’ll have to check out the cartoons you suggest.
On Star Wars, I agree, the method used by the chancellor to turn the Galactic republic into an empire is very similar to modern US history. When the emperor declares the change to empire to the senate, it is met with great applause by the senators. Senator Amadala, who opposed the move said “So this is how liberty dies, to thunderous applause”, which is based on a Bertrand Russell quote. The animated series “The Clone Wars” is also quite good (better that prequels, but not as good as IV or V), but would not be as suitable for young children as Avatar. It ran for about 8 seasons. It’s filled with “terror attacks” that turned out to be false flags. Both sides of the civil war are controlled, at the top, by the same people.
