Did somebody say “small modular, molten fuel salt, thorium fuel cycle, thermal spectrum, breeder reactors”? Well, guess what? Somebody said it. And maybe it’s happening soon! So, what does that mean? Good question! Today on Solutions Watch, James talks to Thomas Pedersen of Copenhagen Atomics about their next gen small modular reactors and how independent communities of the future will be powered.

Hi James & Shaun! Very well done—an informative video, as per usual. Many thanks. The SMR concept certainly appears to hold some very exciting possibilities, and I intend to research the topic with gusto.

I like the idea of small decentralized power plants that power individual communities. I have seen a number of community owned hydro-power plants that provide local power independent of the grid, however few communities have this option.
These small Thorium power plants would allow independent power to nearly any location.
As I see it, Thorium Salt Reactors have been proven to work has far back as the 1960’s in Oak-Ridge Tennessee, however the U.S. government kind of put a lid on it. This time around if China is going to make these small Thorium reactors available to the rest of the world, the U.S. will be left behind, and it will serve them right.
For it is Energy that is more useful than gold, and Data centers, computers, and the like can not run without it.

Who is Bill Gates?
That was a smooth segue at the end of this #SolutionsWatch.
“Who is Bill Gates?” is an incredible piece of work!…and it debuted when the world was upside down, an era in which now seems like an ancient bad dream.
Dont fret, soon enough we’ll learn that we already have nano-nukes within the body getting switched-on via microwave gigs. these little reactors can party hard, and but the only pull the plug, turn it off-option to date seems to be obliteration. These humanoids will eventually serve as gladiators to battle pure bots as entertainment for Android the impotent who might rule over everything caught in its net
on the other hand,
Thomas Pedersen’s premis is that “more energy leads to higher GDP, which leads to better society”. That guy needs to read “The Lorax” (Dr Suess). and go on an extended camping trek, and do a week under the waterfall therapy, and try to explain to an elder aunty with sass, how his efforts are part of the clean-up.
The big obvious immediately feasible solution to the human electricity demand problem,, is to use less.
Its so easy to turn-off lights and everything else when not being used, cycle fridge access to power (theyre probably the biggest domestic users of, whaddya call it? lectricity? We’re so addicted to using it and we dont even know what it is. eventually we may channel the subtle plasma that surrounds us and from which, according to plasma physicists, all matter manifests (spoiler: we already do, thats the basis of chi kung)
Here’s a review of a good read describing what many/most plasma scientists are saying:

Butch was one of these characters you rarely meet, but when you do it comes with the intuition of having met a savant of some sort. We were building a steel boat. He’d appear on site occasionally and rave on about metallurgy, stuff over our heads but useful to know. I checked his claims a few times, he was always spot on. so he earned our respect as a smart and practical guy. Once he said: “now see here, if you take the magnetism in this acre of land and condense it down to the size of a grapefruit, youd have lotsa potential power right?. Yeah but magnetism is always moving away from itself, so we realized we had to contain it with space. Trouble is once youve got that goin you cant stop it without taking out an entire power grid for 500 miles in every direction. The pump I made for a community in the SW has been running without fuel or being stopped for more than 10 years,,” “gee butch where’d you learn how to do that?” “aw thats just stuff from the govt “star wars” program they developed in the 70’s”

* Ever wonder why all these “new” concepts of fuel, medicine, travel, etc. are so toxic.
* Ever look at videos about our true history when we had airships building cities in the 18th and early 19th centuries?
* Ever try and question what you have been told (propagandized) about things?

wonderful!
At last a cheap raliabe method to produce a global supply – near-unlimited amounts – of nuclear waste. Except for the absence of Pu (or “large amounts of transuranic (TRU) elements”) mostly the same waste as from U/Pu reactors. A must-have for every village, if not every household (or at least those that can deal with nuclear waste).
Of course a MS reactor cannot melt down. It already being molten. And in case of accident the mush is just dumped into some holding container below the reactor. (Which btw. could not have been done for SFR … because of why?) And while with SFR the fission reaction would stop in the corium because of absence of moderator, with the MSR (where the moderator is & stays part of the mush, or is ~absent with msFr) … we just rely on geometry?)
And – great! – the MS reactor has – what in water-moderated solid-fuel reactors used to be called – a negative temperature coefficient (too).
And indeed, most solid-fuel reactors had to be shut down for fuel replacement (except e.g. the RBMK, iirc). MSR can run 24/7/365! Why do they have to shut down e.g. gas-pp. for maintenance?
23:00
“Loosing the pressure in a light water reactor leads to meltdown.” Really? I’d have thought loosing the cooling does.
Of course it’s way overblown (PR bla blah). Of course there is something, a lot even, there.

As for energy “poverty” — How much of humankind’s energy consumption is used to (help) satisfy human *needs*, how much for … well, let’s (euphemistically) say “other stuff”?

Back in the day I had delusions attempting to reproduce Pons and Fleeshman’s experiment , 1989 turned into a very bad year for me , men in black suits and staged near death accidents sent me back to the farm , many thought I should have been sent to the Funny Farm ! I just considered the destruction of world energy base economy’s too great of a potential tragedy and moved to the country , planted some peaches then settled on black cows ! Cows aren’t dumb people feed them , pay their taxes and all they have to do is eat and breed , human existence is much more complicated .
I lived on what is now ASU in Tempe AZ and had witnessed a couple inventions in the late 1960’s first was a neighbor who stuck a tube in a antifreeze jug and modified the radiator cap creating the automotive coolant recovery system , second inventor set a black box in the middle of a table and ran a motor and a candle with Hydrogen gas . the coolant recovery guy bought a bunch of McDonalds franchises and the energy box guy just disappeared altogether , hope he found a nice farm somewhere !
Back to SMR’s and Data centers common liability , both generate heat loads that require huge quantities of water to operate cooling tower systems that blow a cool vapor of water and chemicals into atmosphere creating new microclimate zones and atmospheric climate change on a scale that has not been considered into net effect .
I like the SMR concept especially if they are able to utilize toxic Fluoride waste as fuel and if utilized for central heating districts in northern climates without evaporative condenser’s that consume water resources is a win win !
The world economy is still based on energy , and the powers that be have all the knowledge and tools to keep it that way so don’t be surprised if we are having same discussion in the 22 century !

Go put up another of your thousand words posts and leave me alone.

Aren’t you a crabby Ol’ goat? You didn’t appreciate the Ella Fitzgerald instead of the thousand words you deserve? She sang it in 4 words EJ….NO LOVE, NO JOY. Go on back to Oakland and start over. Put a little love in the life of others , deny yourself for once. You might get your wish.
@GBW
You seem to be an intrusive, narcissistic, clud who doesn’t get it that I don’t care who you are or what you have to say, as you come here say a lot ALL the time with some need for attention or validation.
Leave me the hell alone.
E J Doyle,
Not about to EJ. It’s all about you. You need some critical examination of yourself. You are a special example of American Exceptionalism . Maybe you hold some special place on the editorial board that we are not aware of. That would explain why you could question the Editor en Chief why he doesn’t censor an open source reporter. [ Look at your rulebook on open source ]
Why, with that presumed access would you do it ; in the open source form?. [ You are being hateful to 911 for not having any power over his free speech.]
So it must all be in your head. Your hateful attitude is devoid of love. Do you have one love song in your whole portfolio of work ? So again I’ll say ;git a grip. Show some love for yourself and 911 for being here, just for being here you should show some love to somebody. Abandoned the urge to intimidate those who don’t think like you. That’s the Exceptional that nobody likes about Americans. Freedom to do untill they run into an immovable object. Love your way around those objects EJ. I’m not talking about any religions. I’m talking about the power of love. You aren’t getting any where full of hate, and hateful ways and personas . Let a little love in and you can kiss your hateful ass good bye and good riddance.
Not quite a thousand but it’s enough EJ.
This is some mightily interesting development.
The aging cynic in me finds it mildly koinkidental that we are seeing this news come to light about one year after Eric Schmidt said he’s gonna need us to go ahead and provide him with a metric buttload of power for his ultimate human tracking and grid locking project. It’s not like these technologies have been known about for the past 60 years, at least!
Besides, I guess it only feels like yesterday was the last time they told us to turn off the lights to save the planet. My memory isn’t as good as it used to be, weren’t we at war with Oceania as recently as last week?
I’m afraid there won’t be any technical solutions for psychological problems. The already abysmal mental health record has taken a plunge off the cliff.
Some alternatives that do not produce hazardous waste, and were successful in experiments.
Focus fusion –
Fusion alternative that uses magnetism:
The magnetism from plasma currents is used to produce very high levels of compression.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4PMmczowFk
Can be as small as a car-engine.
It uses the plasma itself, and this makes very small concentrated plasma beams.
It can keep going with the instability caused by the fusion reactions.
“Helion” seems to copy some of the ideas.
The Safire Project –
Replicates the electrical environment of the sun.
This electrical environment can sustain itself.
The atoms change differently from fusion. And are called transmutations instead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBInhPFFVog
There is an overlap with LENR.
The structured atomic model helps to predict the changes that occur.
The project is currently working on a system to turn atomic waste into normal waste.
These were fun links, thank you
Yes, humanity needs energy. But before that we need the wisdom and maturity to use it wisely. All that plentiful low cost energy would do today is accelerate the process of pollution, waste, ecological destruction, over consumption and war that is already bringing us to the brink of destruction, that started with our exploitation of fossil fuels in the 19th century.
Hear, hear. What humanity needs is the energy of the heart, so to speak.
ALCOHOL as a FUEL – I am a big proponent of alcohol as a simple, super-clean, viable, sustainable and also carbon-neutral fuel for engines, cooking and heating. Making alcohol can be extremely inexpensive and it can be decentralized. There are countless folks who fly under the radar (because of authoritarian policies and permits) who make it for their own farming or vehicle use.
There are some cool things which you can do with the waste products from making alcohol, i.e. the ‘mash’ and the CO2 which the process gives off as waste. Such as, feed the mash to fishes in your fish farm pond. Use the fish poop to fertilize your greenhouse and the CO2 to bring about a flourishing greenhouse (CO2 in a greenhouse also kills the bugs). …this is being implemented. –Sidenote: Greenhouses will often buy a machine which creates CO2.
Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), an American multinational food processing and commodities trading corporation.
Queued 1:15:00 – A 2013 discussion about ADM and its alcohol production correlating with fish and greenhouse growth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogcv9xS8Pkw&t=4500s
Corn, cattails, seaweed, waste from grocery store produce/bakery, sugar beets, desert plants and fruit trees are some of the many feedstock sources for alcohol production.
Alcohol burns very clean with no pollutants or black soot like petroleum-based fuels.
Currency – In my pipedream view, a cooperative community could issue an exchangeable token or scrip based on produced alcohol. Example: A farmer who brings in a load of fruit could be remunerated with scrip that later can be redeemed for alcohol.
Distiller Dan despises the Guberment Gang.
Distiller Dan is a free-thinker and takes off-grid living to the extreme.
Daniel says:
” I’ve gained a lot of info from people online and would like to give back to the community by teaching others about what to do and what not to do on Ethanol distillation, and Solar System builds, maybe just general off grid living.”
Via the “CornFed Productions” YouTube Channel, Distiller Dan of south Texas gives an intro.
Ethanol On A Off-Grid Farm?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUQawgfsi3A
”This video is basically my intro on off grid distillation. The best channel to go to for drinkable grade moonshine is Barley and Hops Brewing, you’re basically stuck with me if you’re trying to produce ethanol fuel.”
The original cars (Model T – introduced in 1908) were designed to be run on ALCOHOL (ethyl alcohol also called ethanol). No infrastructure existed for fuel. Henry Ford had it all worked out, because most of America’s population at that time had farms. Many farms already had stills with which to make alcohol. Thus, Henry Ford had the “problem of fuel infrastructure” solved. The average Joe could make their own fuel, and/or sell alcohol to people who had cars.
The Covert Operation of Prohibition lasted from the beginning of 1920 until December 1933.
Here’s a video on the design James mentions with lots of details –

I’m not following regularly Corbett report anymore, anyhow, this episode certainly goes into crap category.
Reactors for independent agoristic community….holy Mary and all saints….
What a reactor needs to work:
heavy water
uranium 235 enriched 5%
highly enriched lithium7
thorium (last three in the form of fluoride salt)
Yeah, you’ll get this stuff in your closest Home depot …..no….you’ll get it, period. And beside reactor container, you’ll need neutron shielding, heat exchanger, turbine, generator….Home depot…no, they are crony whatever….from other agorist community…..never mind, you’ll get it because you are guided and empowered by your agoristic faith.
Enough of cynicism and sarcasm, lets get for real.
Thomas Pedersen gave a salesman speech. He didn’t give not a glimpse of answer to crucial question (21:40): How they will clean molten salt of byproducts that are slowing down breeding and nuclear reaction. Cleaning must be done and this is probably a chemical process, but a process at high temperatures, high radiation, high corrosiveness and at the end byproducts must be taken away from enclosure, byproduct that are highly radioactive…this is not a piece of cake. I’ve watched/read enough about MSR and this topic is always skipped, interesting indeed. I have a feeling MSR is similar to fusion, always few years down the road.
Huge problem of MSR is also metallurgy, molten salts are highly corrosive. I never heard what are they using for gaskets. I hope a reactor in the video is just a mock-up, I wouldn’t trust those welds never ever.
I wonder why the website says highly enriched lithium7 when natural lithium is already above 90% “enriched”. If they need more that means expensive isotope separation.
The whole idea of modular reactors is very dubious. MSR reactors are more safe regarding the meltdown, however they are technologically way more complex than classical reactors, hence many more things can break down and you end up with “mini neighborhood” Fukushima. And many small modular reactors all around result in shit guaranteed, if you’re lucky not in your backyard.
Nuclear waste is a big problem regularly diminished by proponents of nuclear energy. Salesman said “storing for 300 years” and then what, dump-yard…I doubt.
How will agoristic communities be powered…what a non-question.
Agoristic idea has a fatal flaw, it has no strategy how to connect with normies that are increasingly drowned in propaganda, but that is the only way to ensure viability on the long run. In military lingo, having your own source of power is just one among myriad of tactics for survival.
However, Sun Tzu:
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”
So, the independent agorist communities of the world are going to escape their poverty – or rather, their energy poverty – one day by buying very normie produced MSR reactors at a currently projected cost of 50 million dollars per reactor.
Interesting!
Well, thank goodness, too! Otherwise, what would an obviously very profitable independent agorist community do to solve their energy poverty without these goddamn things becoming available?!
What a fascinating and exciting episode of SolutionsWatch! I did look into investing in Copenhagen Atomics after James’s last podcast on thorium, until I saw the eye-watering minimum amount you have to invest (!)
Personally I don’t understand the knee-jerk negativity in some of the comments. There’s probably a solution for every problem on this planet. But as long as the mind is closed, the solution will never present itself.
madhu: “There’s probably a solution for every problem…”. If there’s not, extinction is certain. Constant change is a metaphysical observation. We cope by learning the unchanging rules, using our minds individually and then cooperating, perfecting concepts, using reason to achieve knowledge. Recorded for posterity it is wisdom we can learn, add to, build on, pass on, to speed up our collective knowledge. This is our ONLY means of survival.
However, it is blocked, corrupted by overriding emotions, e.g., fear. Fear stops learning, distorts knowledge into superstition, i.e., belief without understanding, based on rote memorization alone.
One question exposes superstition, “why?”. If we know, we can answer, if not, we are stuck with useless words.
Hi James,
As far as I can see there is a very easy way of producing “free” electricity that being getting a generator that requires a small amount of torque to turn it and then an electric motor that can turn it. There we have a circuit that will provide it’s own electricity and creates an excess.
On top of that there is Stanley Meyers use of water as a fuel by seperating the hydrogen out of HO2 and burning that.
Free electricity is everywhere but the system doesn’t want us to know it…
Keep on keeping on and thank you.
😉
