I know what you’re thinking right now: “What shopping bags should I use?”
And I know why you’re thinking it: because you just read that exact question in The New York Times:
And I know why you’re reading The New York Times: because you’re an up-and-coming would-be member of the coastal liberal establishment and you want to signal to other members of that tribe that you’re on their team.
And I know the mental pretzel knots you’re twisting yourself into trying to answer that NYT question. Paper bags used to be better than plastic because they’re biodegradable, right? But now they’re . . . not? Because of how they’re manufactured? Or something?
And I know why this question of paper or plastic bag is bothering you so much: not because you’re concerned about the environment but because you know your fellow coastal hipster trendies will judge you for your choice. You know there’s a right answer here, but you don’t know what it is! AARGH!
Yes, as it turns out, virtue signalling is complicated. But never fear! This week I’m here to provide you with the complete guide to virtue signalling for your tribe of choice, whether you’re a Bernie-cheering, woke progressive activist or a hopium-swilling, Trump-voting MAGA cap-wearer. With this guide in your hand, you’ll never have to worry about accidentally signalling that you’re on the other political team ever again!
And wait, there’s more! This guide has been UPDATED! with all the latest information for 2025 because, as you know, the last several years have seen some pretty wild twists and turns in the standard left/right narrative.
And I know what you’re thinking now: “I’d better subscribe to The Corbett Report so I can find out how to properly signal my (political) gang affiliations!”
Indeed!
So funny, James. I live in Santa Cruz, CA, the virtue signaling capital of the world, other than Berkeley-Oakland. So I know the challenges of mastering woke-nuance!
A liberal friend (yes, I have those or I would have none) does the favor of sending articles from the local paper to his wide audience, or I’d have no idea what was happening locally (I heard the wharf washed out to sea from someone across the country, and that a tornado touched down a few miles away from someone out of state. The lithium battery fires in the next town I heard about from someone in another country. If there’s an earthquake, I’m sure they’ll let me know.)
One of the latest is that students taking on-line classes WHO DON’T HAVE TO BE VACCINATED are putting children at risk and bringing down our numbers, #1 County in the State!!!!
We are top of the 15-minute city hit list, with 26 acres between the downtown and Boardwalk designated for 16-story highrises to fund a stadium no one wants. Half of downtown is under construction with these monstro-cities. The ones already built rent for $3100 for 350 sq’ with no parking. But it’s across from the bus station so no need! Since no one in the US wants to live like this, I think we’ve been traded to China for the Treasury debt and are preparing for the Asian Invasion: https://thirdparadigm.substack.com/p/shanghaied-cities.
They are now putting in a special financial jurisdiction for this, that can take a greater share of property taxes and have no oversight. So we’ll have our own City of London!
The bags have been the bane of my existence, and you didn’t even get into what virtue slogan should be on your re-usable bag. They now have to charge 25 cents per bag or per paper coffee cup. So in order to recycle all the junk mail they could have gotten rid of, I need to buy a paper bag.
Instead, you can just order your toilet paper from Amazon where it will come individually wrapped and delivered within 48 hrs to your door! How’s that for greeny-weeniness?
… I don’t know how you missed this, but the female puppet should have had a sign saying “Mandatory vaccinations nowah!!1!!” It would have fit in with the tshirt fabulously.
Fun fact regarding the plastic bag bans: a few years ago this failed state of mine banned use of medium thickness bags (I believe 25-50 microns, but I’m too lazy to check all the while the actual number is completely irrelevant) which resulted, to bewilderment of absolutely nobody who payed some attention to the matter, in increased production of plastic because thicker and thinner bags were produced in far greater quantities to bridge the gap.
It’s almost everyday made evident and permanently crystal clear that “legislation” is absolutely pointless (insofar ostensible goals are attempted to be achieved) but does anyone take a moment to notice these self evident facts? Nope.
This type of regulations get a lot of visibility in the media, it’s essentially thrust down peoples’ throats, but there is typically no followup to document the utter failure. Nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.
Same thing with recycling until people wised up to the sky, soil and ocean dumping grounds. Was on a flight a few years back. Heard a passenger say/ask, here is my aluminum can, you recycle right? Her very serious, matter of fact answer was, Sure, so when we fly these planes we can spray the skies with aluminum. She was real about it. I was surprised she was brave enough to say it, and have never forgot it.
Advertising that you support committing the traditional ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ is a good way to display your virtue. Or is it?…
I better read the NY Times everyday to stay current on this.
One of my enduring memories of virtue signalling in action comes from an annual country fair that I used to attend in England. The fair is a pleasant event in a lovely country setting with a collection of country crafts and products, great music, interesting talks and with some obligatory hippy hangers-on selling the usual over-priced miracle cures. The Green political party regularly attends with its completely sustainable and reusable little tent and recyclable leaflets in an attempt to promote its election prospects. On one occasion I saw the Green Party parliamentary candidate (a very pleasant lady of ample size) arrive with her very well used bicycle. “So what?” you might ask “,it shows how dedicated she is to sustainable transport”. NO it doesn’t. I’m quite sure I wasn’t supposed to see the said ample lady arrive in her luxury SUV, roll herself out of the vehicle and unload the bicycle from her boot. She parked in a tucked away corner of the car park to avoid being seen (except by me) before wheeling the bicycle through the crowds towards the sustainable and reusable little tent. Sadly I didn’t have my camera to hand. At least the bicycle wasn’t overburdened as part of this green virtue signalling.
I’m Green with envy. That fat fool has some balls, and doesn’t even know it!
PS, or should I say BS.
I happened to fly over the southernmost tip of Greenland twice in early September 2018, the time when the ice would logically be retreated the most, and the thinnest. I was surprised to see (and photograph) massive glaciers in every valley, running right to the sea. That was right after watching a climate debate that featured a large map of Greenland behind the debaters (experts) that indicated a permanent totally ice-free perimeter, of at least 100 miles, going all around Greenland, even into the Arctic Circle. The ‘denier’ did not challenge the map.
I still get in trouble for trusting my own eyes when they see something non-PC. Well, at least these last 20 years have shored up my education. Now I have learned about the classical logical fallacies, just to salvage my sanity.
I need to learn to be bolder. I went with “a very pleasant lady of ample size”. You got to the heart of it with “fat fool”. Thank you, I like that and will use it more often in conversation! The fat fool got away with her wheeler dealer virtue signalling and is now an elected member of the UK parliament. It appears that too many people rejected the evidence of their own eyes. She will go far, but, sadly, not on her bicycle which doesn’t fit in the boot of her latest EV…
Be careful what you wish for. Perhaps practice in front of a mirror, before taking it out on the street.
I get in trouble plenty with my ‘direct’ language. My wife really hates it. Maybe I need to be re-tested to update my license to practice this form of communication.
I got the message with your more elegant description of the lady.
But I am glad this prompted you to reply, as I found the fact that she became a member of Parliament.
“…. My wife really hates it. Maybe I need to be re-tested to update my license to practice this form of communication…..”
Yes, wives tend to do that. 🙂 Lol
Its probably best not to pay them too much mind since they are normally a lot more scared of social programing then guys and thus easier to control via social pressure.
My wife would often wish i’d not say something ‘horrible’ but has to admit I am generally more correct then not.
Yes, it sounds like we have similar situations. Of course, in my case she has a point. Sometimes. I sometimes think twice these days, before releasing a non-essential gratuitous offensive remark.
Definitely, maybe…
🙂
Jordan Peterson talked about this phenomenon, degrees of “agreeablness” is the term. Women tend to be more agreeable than men and wanting to “get along” in general.
For me, I don’t like to waste my time in pointless arguments with people most of the time, especially with people who I have no incentive to engage with. My husband will argue with anyone. I can understand that the argument will likely go nowhere, so is pointless to pursue. He doesn’t get it often and it’s annoying.
I have a “longer fuse” than he does, but once I am angry my response can be much harsher than his would be.
I do tend to be more conflict avoidant (up to a point). But both my mom and grandma were pretty disagreeable for women. My grandma had no difficulty speaking her mind.
Sometimes “direct” language won’t get the message across. Maybe your wife understands that.
I used to work on a crisis line and learned “active listening” techniques. They can be much more effective than being blunt. Of course it’s situational. Sometimes directness will resonate with some people.
Language can be used strategically.
Good points.
That is why I used the term ‘fat fool’ instead of
Fat Fuhkhead.
Maybe you are a Sagitarian and blurt out whatever comes into your mind without thinking of the consequences. Join what I call the hoof in mouth disease.

That sounds like a large and distinguished club. I am a dues paying member.
PS I am not a Sagitarian.
” “So what?” you might ask “,it shows how dedicated she is to sustainable transport”. NO it doesn’t. It reminds me of all the politicians and health officials during the scamdemic who would don their face masks just before coming on stage to make their speech.
Everyone in the audience thought they were so damn politically correct virtue signalers.
I don’t know if this is peak stupid, but it’s certainly peak unbelievable. The satanic ruling mob never sleeps.

“Cash is king”
Out of the mouth of an EU puppet.
I’m starting to wonder if they all made some kind of pact to read whatever lines a Grand Plan AI spits out for them, regardless of how contradictory, counterproductive or retarded it may sound.
‘Just say it dammit. The AI knows what it’s doing.’
These people are not known for consistency. Consistency requiers liars to be smart while inbreeding makes people dimwitted.
Every time I think I’ve seen peak stupid another peakier stupid towers up on the horizon. However, the video by the “European Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality”, Hadja Lahbib, has got to be in the Himalayan category of stupid somewhere. I’m at a loss to understand why they have made a video that is so certain to be ridiculed by everyone who sees it. What’s the point? Then again, Lahbib is no stranger to stupidity. In January she travelled to Damascus to meet the besuited completely reformed and peaceful new leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the proscribed terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham which is definitely not responsible for the ongoing mass killings of thousands of ethnic minorities in Syria. I’m surprised Lahbib went for the Swiss army knife instead of an AK47. Perhaps its because it wouldn’t fit in her handbag.
“…..I’m at a loss to understand why they have made a video that is so certain to be ridiculed by everyone who sees ……”
Consider the view count on the Bank If International Settlements videos….. pretty much no one watches the weird videos the ruling class puts out and it’s mostly to get the managers on the same page as to what the plan is and where they should pull.
They have to coordinate all the management gofers to get them on the program, and normies think it’s boring so the ruling class can be pretty open about its plans….on the bright side that means you and I can see what’s going on a lot more easily these days.
I think Mae Brussel said pretty much the same thing when she was reading a dozen papers every day and cross reference ing it all- they need to openly let some information out to do what they want.
People who buy stuff so others can see them buying stuff are retarded anyway.
Blackpilled (devonnstack) once said that if all the media switched sides the country would be full of Nazi’s (no doubt all signaling their Nazi virtue) in a few months….the majority of people really do just do what they think is popular and have almost no personal morals. Spell checker tried to chicane that to “personality” which would also fit, lol.
Right now the mixed messages are because the elite are trying to decide which of them is at the top and what they actually want to do. That means people who are NOT NPC’s need to be doing THEIR thing to not get squished under the fighting dinosaurs.
You cant ever awaken the masses because they really do just want to be told what to do. All you can ever do is do your best to make sure they get told GOOD things.
Honestly Neema Parvini (acedemicnagent) is right that culture is downstream of power (though it does go both ways IMO) which makes his review of Cobra Kai (on his culture channel) interesting because if you want to turn America back into a fighting empire it will be very necessary to revert media to the 80’s style of macho….it probably takes a decade for the next batch of programmed kids to get to milltary age though.
damn.
the nifty groover at the herbalist today told me that we as a species are evolving. I replied that there was an excessive quantity of anxious ignoring stupidity spewing all over the planet, including in our town and this very shop. He said, “but people are living longer”. so we can expect long aggressive stupidity?
Yes mkey that jimmy dore is off the hook,
with all the madness, surely there must be a balance of some sublime harmonic beginning to reverberate. from the ground, through the trees, I listen hard, but cant hear it, yet. surely we’re in the muck of the rotting chrysalis, humanity’s dumpster juice, a slurry of maggots’ cheered on by heaving mounds of cockroaches
remember to listen for the balance
and
good luck
In the 80’s they would tell us to use plastic instead of paper to “save the trees”.
I suspect that the paper-vs-plastic thing — like the paper straw thing, or even the scamdemic masks — was primarily a psychological tactic.
They aren’t interested in the effect your bag choice will have on the environment, they’re interested in the effect your bag choice will have on you, psychologically.
It’s like a mini induction ritual, psychologically, for those who were on the sidelines, and a reinforcement/retaining system for the already-inducted.
I live in a state in the US where plastic grocery bags are banned. This is disappointing, as I actually recycle all my plastic bags, mostly for use in small trash bins around my house. Paper bags don’t quite do the job.
Let me guess: the graphics designer has no idea what the rationale for respecting the Battle Flag is because he is a Yankee or from elsewhere and has no real idea what they are doing.
The fact is that they were right and the Giant Government that took over was wrong.
I think it was described as the four governments of America being
1) the articles of confederation
2) the constitution (which was done as a bit if a surprise without proper pre authorization)
3) the big government and the rise of war corporations that rose to power and then stayed in power after the civil war
4) the New Deal which doubled down on all that that and shredded was left of the old constitution
It’s like every generation or two the US re-sets itself into something new… and generally in a more centralized direction.
Generally speaking your correct though, no one respects the confederate flag any more then they respect any other flag of a destroyed power. You can see the same maltreatment of the US flag today and of the Union Flag of the UK.
That said while the legal rational of forcing states to stay in the union is kinda weak the Confederacy was very much a rich mans project, just like the insane radical abolitionists drove the US into invading the south over the wishes of normal people.
Solution: If the government wants to block your freedom, see it as an invitation to express your freedom

The idea is to turn around the effort/energy that the “government” is laying on you. (aIkido)
I hate to say it, because I knew a fat old guy who could kick my ass with Akaido, but to use techniques like that takes A LOT of dedication and study.
I would hope people using those kind of techniques on authorities actually take the time to know what their doing and understand them first….other wise they will end up like the Tai Chi (another very labor intensive martial art) ‘Master’ who got knocked out by an MMA guy in a chinese match in under 30 seconds.
People do need to understand their opponent. That is a basic concept in Aikido, understanding the energy of ones opponent that way their techniques can be used against them.
My husband used to study Aikido and Jujutsu and I took a few classes and found them extremely challenging. I actually hurt my back doing too much. But I gained a lot of respect for people who study and excel in martial arts.
My husbands teacher was an old white guy and he was exceptionally gifted and could really read people well. His intuition was remarkable.
I really don’t like Akkido rolls, I taught myself Systema rolling off the internet and it worked way better for me. It does give people who get good at it a very cat like grace IMO- the old fat dude I mentioned glided when he looked like a waddeler. He had done it for 20 years or something though, and had all the tiny motor things down to perfection.
I have always been clutzy and had poor coordination and formal martial arts really would help get rid of a lot of the mild dispraxia you see “in kids today” (I was an early adopter, lol)
I really think everyone should do a bit a tussling in the mat or sparing just because most folks are not used to the contact and the fear over comes their brain when bad things happen. But I don’t know that is really enough for fitness on its own.
I need to get back into Tai Chi now I’m getting older since it’s like a wonder drug for oldies 🙂 while not suggesting your old I’ll recommend it if you have a bad back or balance issues….relaxing too.
I taught my kids what I got taught before anything fancy and really think that Fairbairn combattives are best because dude distilled everything down to a core he could teach in a few hours. Actually….wait a sec
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oxFoTlTL9_E
A guy just did the SOE syllabus- I kinda think the original ww2 training films are better but this dude is good…. Like he explains it’s simple and works and is based on gross rather then fine motor skills. I taught thisnkind of stuff little kid and it works for unfit people too if they have the right mind.
His book on instinctive shooting is pretty good too- I used to practice in the garage with a co2 pistol during the coof.
(On rolling there is an excellent Israeli dude I used to watch but the Pramak dude was the best for rolls) I still look like a sack of potato’s but did manage not to die when I slipped on the ice last time. That’s no joke either- I got a split head like that as a kid.
https://m.youtube.com/@ransuru
The rolling was how I hurt my back. This was like a decade ago or longer and I had to go to PT. It was pretty bad. I never took another class after that. Tai Chi is great for all ages but especially older people. I should get into it because I am getting older too. My body is much more fragile now I’ve noticed. Not too unhealthy but less flexible and resilient.
I want to get into lifting weights but have been putting it off. I have to go slowly instead of doing too much too soon.
Glad you recovered from your fall. Hitting your head is pretty dangerous at any age.
Weights are good but since I hurt my arm on the bike I don’t do them… wife thinks the rotatior cuff is buggered.
Uou need to get on top of being fragile NOW and you will be active for decades…..my dad was carrying stuff ip and down ladders in his 70s while my mom spent the last years of her life in bed and died much younger then he did because she was even more lazy then me. The wife’s grandpa walked everyday and died in his 90s as active and mobile as a healthy 60 or 70 year old…. Awful taste in TV though (“he-haw was his favorite show….) he also went thru the dictionary from a to z and used the five words he was at in conversation every day. Pretty sharp even at the end…. He was hearing angels sing when he went so generally a win IMO
That’s a bummer. Maybe you can do some PT on the shoulder. I do think weight lifting is a great exercise for the bones and keeping them strong.
It’s important to have strong bones in older age.
Weight lifting is great for the bones and both men and women start losing bone density due to hormone drops.
A lot of the older folks around my neck of the woods are doing hormone shots too. I know it’s unnatural but I think it can be helpful sometimes.
Hormone shots are like magic for some people but I kinda think they are a sign that the person is unhealthy (or why fix it) to begin with. My arm is mostly good but I need to do this thing the chiropractor did to pop it back into alignment- I use a door frame. It was so weird the first time because before she fixed it it felt like it had a delay in moving, or was under water. One click and it was mine again.
Good luck with the weights!
The mentioning of “Aikido” was just to quickly explain the “turn around the effort of the opponent”.
The movie bloodsport demonstrates the various eastern combat techniques.
But the best attack is when you never get spotted in the first place.
And the best defense is when you never get in a fight.
But using this technique, Michael has worked hard against the government.
It might be a good trick to add to our arsenal.
Why do people virtue signal in the first place? Basic needs for belonging and community? Or is it shallowness and laziness that are motivating factors?
If virtue signaling is based on some unmet needs and people are attempting to satisfy them, how do you replace that? Or rather, how do you set a trend or lead people to want to have real values rather than embracing manufactured identities? Does it even matter for people who aren’t mindless followers who want to live their lives in relative freedom?
I mean “we” can mock these people but it might not be enough to create another narrative. Maybe the “training” needs to happen very young and if people were not taught to be independent thinkers in their formative years, it will be hard to shift mass consciousness. Maybe people have always been this way. Maybe they just want to live a simple life with simple choices like what bag they use at the grocery store.
Lots of people are buying or rather renting expensive cars to signal financial success and who they are. Edward Bernays comes to mind.
It might be true that in our lifetime masses of people will just keep being “normies” It’s disappointing and isolating to some extent.
“….Why do people virtue signal in the first place? Basic needs for belonging and community? Or is it shallowness and laziness that are motivating factors? ….’
Its basically a survival heuristic as far as I know….. the pattern is “if other people are doing it and did not die it must be good” and so they copy what looks like it works.
Add in that if you were in a small tribe or village people living on the edge of sudden death you REALLY wanted those people to LIKE YOU, the reason getting excluded and rejected can feel so bad is because at one point it REALLY meant that you would probably die because your fellows cast you out of the unit you needed to survive.
THIS means in that in society almost EVERYONE wants to be thought of as “nice” , ‘smart’ and “high class’ rather then poor and gross and stupid so people start copying the ideas / behaviors of popular ‘winners’
The ‘mismatch’ is that today most people are not in a real community, their in a Media Soup and the people who control that can make all kinds of retarded stuff look “High Status” by boosting the message and bigging up actors and media personalities – so its basically hacking a survival system to program people.
This desire NOT to be rejected as ”low class” and ”gross” and bad is hacked when the TV (or internet these days) tells you that High Class, ‘nice’, people (which you probably want to be seen as so ) buy Tesla’s or think Trump is evil , or that conspiracy theorists are racist nutters or even that you should dress in a certain way. Middle class people are the WORST for this, aping their social betters by buying special stuff since before teh Victorians.
Blackpilled really used to do a good breakdown in his movie reviews, but something i noticed myself was how many times ‘baddies’ on US TV had southern accents or were religious… you hardly (if ever) saw evil gay characters. Archie Bunker was an early way to make what were pretty normal white American attitudes look stupid and bad, and most importantly LOW CLASS…. the UK had almost the exact same show “Alf GArrnet” filling the same role)
I hate to say it but this ‘aspirational’ hack can lead people to do revolting stuff like transing their kids so their as ‘high class’ as the Hollyweirdos who have a statistically VERY odd number of LGBTQ kids, often adopted (i guess neutering your pets is less evil then doing it to your bio kids….? ) There is also no way other then social pressure/aspiration for the ‘hotspots’ of kids coming out as Trans or sodomites in particular schools and freind groups (see #Abigale Shrier # ‘irreversible damage’) ….. getting people to use special straws or grocery bags is harmless child play in comparison to that.
The funny thing about this is that actors were once considered by to be of about the same social status as prostitutes (and lets be honest, they generally have some faults hence the derisive ‘theater kids’ slur)
“….f virtue signaling is based on some unmet needs and people are attempting to satisfy them, how do you replace that?…”
By having a REAL community, with people who are healthy and good rather then letting sicko media types have a direct line into our brains
There was an American Catholic Bishop who likened having a TV in your house to letting a Rabbi sit their and chat with your kids….dude was NOT wrong
“Its basically a survival heuristic as far as I know….. the pattern is “if other people are doing it and did not die it must be good” and so they copy what looks like it works.
Add in that if you were in a small tribe or village people living on the edge of sudden death you REALLY wanted those people to LIKE YOU, the reason getting excluded and rejected can feel so bad is because at one point it REALLY meant that you would probably die because your fellows cast you out of the unit you needed to survive”
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
I have noticed that Hollywood TV and movies do portray white “conservative” men in a bad light and “low class” That’s an astute observation and not something I really noticed as a kid. Class is a big motivator for people though. Being poor is not popular and tends to be frowned upon. Hollywood movies though, most of them are propaganda pure an simple. They distort reality and people start believing what they see in movies subconsciously.
That’s where propaganda gets people is at the subconscious mind. Same with social media and drugs. And once that part of the brain is “trained” it’s more difficult to change the patterns of though. So, like you say it seems they have hacked that basic survival instinct. People are grasping for some sense of belonging and community and to be “liked” and put on these shallow manufactured identities.
Patterns of thought.

I think Mr Corbett made the point once about “media” and occult “mediums” channeling outside forces.
Ideological “possession” is not dissimilar to the demonic variety
This could have gone under the Harakiri episode, but it fits here, too. Is Harakiri a dramatic form of virtue signalling?

Another comment about paper bags. Did you know they have insecticides on them? probably so roaches don’t live in them during storage. What is up with Occupy Mars t-shirt? I saw a guy wearing one a couple days ago.
