The last thing you want is to be cornered by one of those tinfoil hat weirdos at a party, amirite? But, hey, you’re into sports, right? And social media? And entertainment? You know, everyday stuff that normal people like to talk about? Great! Because, boy, do I have some stuff to talk about with you! Don’t worry, no crazy political rants here, I promise!
Back when we were in school we heard the question a million times: “What are you going to be when you grow up?” Some of us had an answer, others were undecided, some had no idea. But we all assumed that the question could be answered. That whatever career we chose already existed. But in a world where technological and societal change means our children’s future jobs likely don’t exist yet, what does that say about the ability to “manage” or “direct” the “economy”? What if I told you that no one could direct the economy, and that that was a good thing? What if I told you that the greatest trick the ruling class ever pulled was getting us to believe we need them in the first place?
What if this data, our emails, our phone calls, our credit card transactions, our social media posts, our cell phone GPS logs, and all of the hundreds of other pieces of data that are admittedly being collected on us every day, were being fed into a database so gargantuan it contains a digital version of every single person on the planet? And what if that database were being used by the Department of Defense to war game various scenarios, from public reactions to natural disasters to the likelihood of civil unrest in the wake of a declaration of martial law? Remarkably, this is precisely what is happening.
