A Concrete Solution for Fukushima – #SolutionsWatch

by | Aug 30, 2023 | Solutions Watch, Videos | 20 comments

Last week, TEPCO, in conjunction with the Japanese government, began dumping radioactive Fukushima wastewater into the Pacific Ocean. Joining us today to talk about the consequences of that decision, what it will mean for peoples around the Pacific, and what could be done to mitigate this disaster, is Dr. Robert H. Richmond, Research Professor and Director at the Kewalo Marine Laboratory in the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

  1. CHAPTER ONE
OF THIS BRILLIANT DOCO ( see the link below ) BY JOHN PILGER IS ALL ABOUT THE MARSHALL ISLANDS AND includes a protest group interviewed in OKINAWA JAPAN. They gather at the US army base every single day to peacefully protest. PILGER TRAVELS THERE AND INTERVIEWS THE MARSHALESE PEOPLE WHO GIVE TESTIMONY OF THE FALL OUT FROM THE NUKE TESTING DONE THERE .

    • Thank you for sharing the video link. EVERYONE should watch this video.

  2. It is not just Fukushima

Can these dumps be compared? They contain different isotopes.

Did the toxic/radioactive isotopes kill the ocean-ground life?

  3. It appears that experiments are designed to provide the outcome that the funder desires.

  4. Quote by Thomas Sowell: “There are no solutions. There are only trade-offs.”

And in the case of Fukushima, it seems they’re choosing to trade the health of the ecosystem, for ease and convenience. Capturing radiological material and keeping it in the place that is already condemned seems much more logical (and healthy) than spreading it far and wide throughout the entire food chain.

And as an aside, I must say that “trade-off watch” doesn’t have the same ring to it “solutions watch”.

Thanks for your attentive and activating work, James.

    • @Torus. Good comment 🙂

    • Torus,

You are right there. Seems they are taking the hexafluoride approach and spreading it out giving a little to everyone.

  5. Excellent episode. Very impressive guest.

    Now do Maui.

    Thanks !

  6. Actually, in some ways, this current situation with Fukushima’s TEPCO / Governing Authorities underscores how an Anarchist/Vountaryist mindset trumps all this corporate/government BS.

On a general perspective across the boards, in my opinion, I feel a great overall “Solution” is to make governing and corporate authorities individually liable, civilly and criminally.
I’ll cheer the day when some of these government or corporate officials are thrown in jail, especially when it comes to jeopardizing public health.

I believe that a huge portion of the population would back eliminating corporate and sovereign immunity.
The public never advocated for corporate and sovereign immunity. Authorities did.

Putting some heads on a long row of pikes would cut out this type of sociopathic behavior.

    • HRS.
Homie ,I was just wondering how dark this here news paper has become. I’m a little shocked but not at all surprised. I was just saying a minute ago that waterboarding Larry Silverstein 99 times would be ok and then you just said Heads on a long row of Pikes
This gruesome imagery is now acceptable? This is a sign and it’s hard to read. I have come to know the beast and I have to wonder is animal husbandry necessary ? To what extreme. I saw a lot on the race track on how to deal with an inbred or overbred thoroughbred horse. A horse that would kill you if given the chance. The solution was always violence, and only worked one forth of the time.
Is this where we are today?. I can’t remember it being quite this bad in the past, without some action,or oversight from the state to curb these excesses. No one wants to take “them” on. The checks and balances are way out of whack.
Frankly I’m ready to PolPot them all into reeducation camps.

      • GBW says:
“I can’t remember it being quite this bad in the past”
        That’s right…You said it…I agree.

        “head on a pike”
I’m using it as a metaphor. It has more impact than the phrase “set an example”.
Putting corrupt officials in jail sets an example and warns potential transgressors against the consequences of wrongdoings.

Elizabeth Holmes (CEO of Theranos) belongs in jail for her deliberate deceptions.
        I’m glad she is there.
There should be hundreds of politicans and CEOs in the same queue.
Japanese government officals, international officials and TEPCO officials need to be held accountable. The world and people are being harmed by their deceptions. I consider their acts or inactions on par with war crimes.

The world would be a better place if many of these sociopaths were incarcerated.
But that would take a sane society.

  7. Thank you so much James for once more putting forth good ideas. Such a neat solution; makes one wonder why on earth there isn’t a worldwide chorus of approval and an ‘official’ determination to put such a simple and effective plan into being? It makes me very suspicious.

  8. To me, this seems like an attack on the West Coast of the US. It’s similar to the East Palestine disaster in that it depends on the motion of fluids to deliver poison to intended targets over great distances. The Fukushima Release is to the West Coast what the East Palestine Disaster is to the East Coast. What do we make of the timing? They hold this contaminated water for 12 years and then release it now? What’s the rush? To a conspiracy theorist like me, this proves that governments are working together to kill the populace. I believe that in 1994, 160 nations did promise to eliminate 90% of their people by 2030, and that’s what they are doing. FEMA is an invading army that uses fire as its groundwork. They will never relinquish the land and resources they are stealing from private real estate owners until we win the war, which seems unlikely. It’s not really a war, is it? In a war, people on both sides die. This is a multifaceted bold-faced slaughter, and it’s just getting started.

  9. Hello!
Thanks for this episode, James! Even though Dr. Richmond’s concrete idea has not been accepted, I am relieved to know that there really is a good idea for dealing with the radioactive water other than dumping it in the ocean. I wonder what officials’ reasoning was for rejecting the proffered solution? I also wonder how Tepco has been “treating” the water to make it less harmful? Chemicals of some sort?

  10. Excellent.. use the concrete.. easy solution there.. and then tell everyone that the fish are contaminated so that it gives the oceans a few years to replenish.. solution/solution.

  11. My husband’s passing comment when I mentioned this solution to him was “Maybe they don’t care about polluting global waters with their nuclear waste when we vaporized their grandparents with our nuclear energy.”

We gave up the right to say, “How dare you?” when we dropped atomic bombs on their country and people.

It’s great to hear, nonetheless, that there are solid solutions to great problems we all face. Keeps hope alive despite the blatant disregard by the powers that shouldn’t be.

    • candm
“…We gave up the right to say, “How dare you?” when we dropped atomic bombs on their country and people…”

While the Japanese were basically forced into war toasting a few of them with a nuke was probably better then fighting them hand to hand thru the Home Islands with the ensuing Mass civilian casualties.
More importantly why waste more American lives? The firebombing killed more people the the nukes did anyway.

As to ‘rights to revenge’ I know some pretty vengeful Chinese folks who still hate the Japanese with an unhealthy vigor.

  12. Thanks for this fantastic interview James and Robert. It was great to hear Robert’s take on this topic, especially details of his visits to the area. Appreciate the great work!
