All I can say is this post by James is very frightening. Nuclear war, whether regional or worldwide, could lead to human extinction. How could that outcome be avoided this time. as it has luckily done in the past?
Atomic war even in a large scale is unlikely to end humanity- it could certainly kill tens of millions but TBH a full on war with people throwing ICBMs against each others cities is a LOW probability.
You should be more concerned about someone tripping a continent wide power outage (you can’t just turn the grid back on if it goes out….or would be weeks at least)
or someone turning off the water supply by hacking the computers controlling it. It’s a lot easier and low cost to kill millions via attacks on the infrastructure then actually blowing stuff up
You can take some steps to mitigate these issues if you act now- having water filters, stored water, living away from a big city and having some supplies to hand.
