The internet. GPS. Windows. Videoconferencing. Siri. Smart dust. Why isn’t it common knowledge that these technologies started as DARPA-funded projects? When the government, defense contractors and tech giants team up to create the next generation of military technology, who wins and who loses? Find out on tonight’s broadcast.

  1. IBM scientists develop brain inspired chip

Since 2008, scientists from IBM have been working with DARPA’s Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE) programme.

They have developed the chip, or processor called TrueNorth, which is claimed to be efficient, scalable, and flexible non-von Neumann architecture using contemporary silicon technology.

  2. Thank you in advance for any and all comments pointing out my slip of the lip saying Johnson delivered the farewell address on the military-industrial complex. It was of course Eisenhower. (Judging from the YouTube comments this random brain fart spoken off-the-cuff during a live radio transmission while watching the show clock is a grave and serious threat to my credibility. I have been suitably chastised.)

    • I always thought it was LBJ. Which I found was a bit odd, since LBJ was such a mega prick. I guess my knowledge of American presidents leaves a lot to be desired.

  3. Mate, the only mistake you’ve ever made is THAT tie on New World Next Year 2017 🙂

  4. A positive project of DARPA several years ago (early 2000s) was funding Sonex for the development of their enhanced internal combustion engine. See http://www.sonexresearch.com.

The Sonex automotive engine is almost ready for marketing. I expect them to offer VW a solution to their emissions problems sometime in 2017.

    • Does that offer only lower emissions or is fuel efficiency affected as well?

  5. James,
This was the first video that I’ve watched on this site that had a pop-up “commercial” appear along the bottom. It was for the American Cancer Society.
    Thanks for all you do,
    Hopeful One

    • Yes, sadly it’s due to the clip used at the 39:03 mark, which has been monetized by the copyright owner.
