Hi James, amusing anecdote. Life is strange isn’t it, the way we seem to go around in loops but with a different perspective each time around. As far as fact checking goes, unless you know everything about everything then it’s all cherry picking isn’t it? There is a point where you know enough about a topic to be considered ‘informed’ and then your own analysis carries some weight but at what point does cherry picking become informed? I would love to know your opinion. Love your work, cheers from the chilly damp climes of eastern Oztralia.
The spirals of time and life continue. (Truth is Stranger than fiction, fiction has to make sense…Mark Twain). The variations keep it interesting, and it is challenging to tease out the salient patterns. Your point about cherry picking is worthy and thought provoking.
In a certain sense, facts do exist. For instance, if the period of rotation of Foucault’s Pendulum can tell us the latitude, we can say the formula to calculate it generates reliable facts. If I ask Ai the diameter of a specific plumbing part number, I would call its answer a fact.
For more nebulous topics, robots are still cherry picking, although in a less emotional way. That is actually an improvement over the confusion often generated with the output of hysterical or overwrought humans. But overall, the dangers of blindly trusting Ai must always be remembered.
Exactly. To have discernment, you have to have a base amount of knowledge about a topic. It is NOT easy and it takes a LOT of time. Even on topics I think I know quite a bit about, I have been surprised to be told about some aspect or another that I missed.

The absurdities of the rising fact-checking class can be seen most clearly around controversial subject matter.
One of the best and clearest examples of our lifetimes of ‘controversial subject matter’ is the attacks of September 11, 2001.

“If voting helped – it would be stopped.” Voting doesn’t allow a fundamental choice, e.g., there is no box for “none of the above” or “leave this office empty” or “abolish this office”. Can a “law” be challenged as “null & void”? No, not without violence. That resistance has been made impractical by the creation of a permanent standing army, against the warnings of the anti-federalist founders.
Resisting violently, appropriate self-defense, has been made a crime but it was the anti-federalists recommendation when the constitution didn’t stop usurpation, failure of the “great experiment” with “checks & balances”.
So, what is left? Nothing but surrender of rights, self-enslavement, i.e., the present politics? The POTUS keeps sending out his “ICE spokesmen” to prove “resistance is deadly” – you will be eliminated. Local, state, county, city LEOs echo his warning. We the People are being warned over & over daily – We the People are outgunned, unfree, slaves to “the political powers that shouldn’t be”.
So – why do we allow it? Finance it? Grant it moral exemption? Or worse – moral approval?
Why don’t we take control of our lives with local self-government – based on voluntary agreements – instead of initiation of violence? Only violence in self-defense is moral, essential for survival. It’s reasonable, logical.
We ask those questions all the time. I’m watching closely for the tipping/breaking points – because we are inching ever closer here in the USA. We are gradually forming freedom groups, courthouse reform, law enforcement outreach, Lesser Magistrate training, and much more.
But the bulk of the folks where I live are still just plain mentally and physically exhausted. The C19 injection, jacking the ambient EMR to insane levels, killing 10,000 people with hurricane Helene in one morning where I live 21 months ago, the toxic food habits they are just learning to break, Notice of Liability, etc.
I spend as much time harping on human detoxification and EMR reduction, as I do on creating a real Citizens’ Constitution. But, the gateway is becoming super obvious. If I want to reach a significant number of people with all of these ideas – including voluntaryism – my community needs a website dedicated to all of that work and information so people can go there and see what’s going on locally.
I am also starting the American National re-classification process myself, and I have learned to establish a 508 (C)(1)(a) Ministry and done it. My training on contract liability with InPowerMovement provided this interview I got a real aha moment out of this interview:

Encarta! I haven’t heard that word in decades…:)) An entire book was written about the brutal farce that the creation of Encarta was at Microsoft. The plot used the Encarta programmers and one other follow on project to describe how nightmarish the microsoft working environment actually was back in the early 2000’s. It has been scrubbed or suppressed. I couldn’t find it. I know it was a real book. One of my good bosses had to read it for one of her MBA courses.
I can relate to the psycho boss story. I’ve seen the same many times here in the USA, and in a couple of those companies, I was able to help the psycho reap what they sowed…:)))
It would seem logical that “fact” checking most any subject these days would be a fools errand considering all the deviations from “truth” that have been intentionally offered or obfuscated. And of course the position of the “checkers” perspective, training, and life influences. Leading to potential cognitive bias and distortion, illogical interpretation or inaccurate judgment.
Shaman and Medicine men and women and tribal cultures had healing herbs and methods that challenged Big Pharma’s toxic poison and were wiped out where ever white folks went.
Just look at what nonsense, pain, torture and more has come from the god, devil, heaven, hell MYTH. A destruction of sovereign thinking and behavior and de-emphasizing true spiritual beliefs.
Fact checking building supplies for instance. 1000 years ago Romans were building roads that are still usable today and working with concrete that can’t be duplicated to this day. And our infrastructure is crap with constant need for maintenance or replacement.
When Rockefeller took over the educational system and installed the Prussian method of creating workers not thinkers and the Skull&Bones society took over higher education installing their people on university boards of directors choosing mostly same think professors and ending up with today’s over priced mind controlled blue hair sycophants.
Do we live under a dome and is space real? Why have dozens of nations signed an agreement to close off Antarctica to any exploration? Why do “Governments” (Control Minds) have the right to put thousands of “truths/facts” hidden under “Top Secret” classifications? Why does the American food industry use hundreds of chemicals not allowed in European nations? Which of course kills the healthy diet myth.
Most all of the answers IMO is greed. Greed is NOT good. Just address the studies that indicate today’s youth if given the choice will choose fame/celebrity over intelligence.

I under stand what you are saying. Since this is all digital dialog and not face to face chat we don’t know what and how the other’s life is about.
My strength as a social/political activist are my songs and brief comment posts just here. And of course they by necessity need to be truthful about the darkness that is in our lives. But that commenting is only for a bit or so.
The rest of my life is perhaps in your terms, quite miraculous. Healing my body of COPD this past year as well as reducing my eye glaucoma pressure without Big Pharma poison and getting my body well back on the road to fitness.
I do spiritual not religious ceremony with my tribal instruments I made. I do walks around the property when it is cool out and observe the beauty of living here…green rolling hills from the monsoon rains; very few chemtrails so lots of big puffy clouds and blue skies; I can do bird call trade offs with some of the feathered friends; I work off line on my music, making slide shows, etc. And on and on.
One of the reasons I like living alone is my creative agendas have no limits. So thanks for “Sunny” suggestion, doing the best I can out here the High Desert.

I really, really like hearing personal stories like this! They are ‘real.’ They can be very interesting. They prompt mental imagery. I think that anecdotes help to raise an understanding to the author or situation. I appreciate Corbett giving a brief backstory and the timeline of circa 2005. The bit about the asshole boss is something that many of us can identify with. Corbett’s personable 9 minute telling made for a nice respite in this August heat.

People should familiarize themselves with Dick’s infamous Metz, France speech to a science fiction conference audience about alternate histories he claimed to have experienced, too.

Something similar: roofs on fire
The UK gov is warning for roofs getting on fire due to hot weather.
In reality it is the solar panels that cause the fires.
With a tiny short-cut they can start to burn.
This problem was not noticed during cloudy summers.
The solar panels also get extremely hot.
They convert a lot of their generated energy into heat,
and when they get hot they generate more heat.
In my experience, they get hotter than a black flat roof.

I really enjoy Phillip K. Dick.
I’ve read Valis, and some of his short stories.
He came from very tragic beginnings. He had a twin sister who died from starvation, because his mother couldn’t afford to give milk to both infants. His mother fed him because he cried more than his sister. This haunted him for the rest of his life and influenced a lot of his writing.
I just bought The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch as an ebook. I’ve barely begun to read it.
He wrote several stories that became major Hollywood films, like Blade Runner and Minority Report.
I really like how his writing is grounded in the physical senses, and also explores all these questions of morality and ethics and spirituality. He guides readers to ponder larger concepts of existence.
I’m looking forward to next month’s book club podcast.

I really enjoyed seeing this more personal side of James. We usually hear him breaking down complex topics and challenging the way information is presented, so hearing about his own experience as a fact checker made him feel much more relatable.
I can relate to the idea that certain experiences can completely change the way you look at the world and the direction you want your life to take. I’ve been thinking a lot about my own future, including eventually building a life in Japan, and part of that process has been questioning assumptions about what we’re told we’re supposed to do and deciding what actually makes sense for me.
It was interesting hearing about one of the experiences that helped shape James into the person and researcher he is today. Really appreciated this more personal episode.
Yeah, the “quote a source that quoted another source that quoted another source…” problem was in full swing a long time ago. It’s so much worse now, when AI summarizes John Q. Bot’s reddit post as a credible information source.
I went to journalism school (which I didn’t enjoy one bit) in the early 90s. As bad as it was back then, I could have never gotten with citing social media posts as primary sources, or any level of source.
I also got into publishing for a bit before forking off in another writing direction.
Fact checking in and of itself is a good concept to my mind, as something a decent writer does naturally and welcomes from editors. Well, sometimes at least. What honest writer wants his or her name attached to a published factual error?
But using so-called “fact checking” to censor debatable opinions and inconvenient facts is quite another. And that’s how it’s used today. It’s used in many ways, from scrubbing unpopular opinions and facts from search results to overt bans.
