  1. I guess I’m not quite over Turtledove’s Powerless and the very missing violence. Leaning away from the repugnance of the pedere of revolutionary thinking , violence has been put in the closet. Mary Ann Hanaghan had the introduction of a perfect Dickins villain but deliberately stunted in Powerless. The vocus of the violence of the revolutionary is never developed and left unrealized .Mary Ann Hannaghan is the only person who has enough evil able of acting on her determined political pursuits and the final solution needed to accomplish the parties goals. Doing the necessary things, the hard things, history has a good record of what it takes to get the job done. That is the glaring undeveloped idea of Powerless architecture. Deliberately ignoring the pitch forks and torches.
The character of Teresa Defarge in “A Tale of Two Cities ” reminded me of Mary Ann Hanaghan . Defarge, however , was necessary in showing the need of violence in revolutionary times but must be governed by compassion to make it a just action. Justice may be blind but knows when the scales are deformed and an obscene imbalance exists. The obscene imbalance of today is becoming evident and as a farmer prepares his fields for another season , we need a farmers insight as to the preparation of the ground. There are a multitude of tares in the field and will physically need to be removed, down to the roots; without destroying the fields and all the farmers. Violence is just another tool but can be used incorrectly. Madame Defarge is emblematic of the nature of violence and could not be ignored as part of the Dickens reality where Turtledove’s Mary Ann Hanaghan is full of impotence of avoiding violence. Two very different worlds.
